ZURICH, SWITZERLAND

Zurich, too, is a large and elegant city. But it also has a rich past. Best known today for its banking and shopping venues, it holds a special place in the history of the Reformation. Perhaps its most famous Churchman was Huldrich Zwingli, whose statue is seen at left, in front of the Church he pastored. Zwingli was a great leader in the Reformed Church - along with Calvin - and helped to develop liturgy in the Protestant world.
Despite imposing stores and financial structures, Zurich retains many charming streets such as this one, the Augustiner Gasse. Around every corner are wonderful nooks and crannies worthy of investigation.
One of our most enjoyable experiences was taking a cruise on one of the city-run boats on the Zurich See - Lake Zurich. With a single pass sold at a very reasonable price, visitors can travel by rail, bus and boat all over the city. And these boats have routes just like busses. The accommodations inside were very pleasant and comfortable. This was one of the first Spring days in Zurich, and the residents were out in force enjoying every moment.

 
We went up to a mountain place called Uetliberg, by train. There we had an exquisite view of the City of Zurich. And lunch.

 

At Uetliberg, there is a wonderful old hotel in the traditional Swiss style. But there are also some fantastic sculptures of weird giraffes, ostriches and this spider. (The spider is the one standing in back of Jim!)
